BOARD MEETING: 11th Annual O’Neill/Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest; July 15-17, 2016; C-Street, Wrightsville Beach, NC.

INVENTORY: Conditions were typical of summertime in the Southeast: Three days of scorching sunshine, air temps bordering on the triple-digit mark and a flat ocean the day before the event. But with a $25,000 prize purse on hand, the pros arrived in droves. And eventually, so did the waves. “We received a little bump on Friday,” said O’Neill Mid-Atlantic sales rep/contest director Brad Beach, “and we had a fun little wave all the way through Sunday.”

FOCUS GROUP: “To make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience,” Brad Beach simplified about the overall goal of this event. “We had some super talented surfers show up, like Cam Richards, Benny Bourgeois, Asher Nolan, Brett Barley, Evan Thompson, Conner Lester, Knox Harris and Kei Kobayashi (a new face), as well as a super talented grom squad from South and North Carolina: Bo Raynor, Gabe Morvil, Micha Cantor and (reigning Pro champion) Luke Gordon.” In the end, relocated South Carolina sensation Cam Richards flew back East to dominate the Pro division, taking out former event champ Evan Thompson, New Smyrna Beach dynamo Daniel Glenn and contest veteran/Hurley East Coast team manager Asher Nolan, who finished 2nd-4th, respectively.

GO GETTERS: Many expected visiting San Clemente, CA, supergrom Kei Kobayashi to run away with the Guys 15 & Over title, at the very least, but he was halted by Palmetto State sensation Micha Cantor. Cantor’s Southern North Carolina neighbors Gabe Morvil and Bo Raynor brought up the rear in the Final, placing 3rd and 4th, respectively.

MISSION STATEMENT: “There was lots to do for everyone — the surf contest, activities on the beach for spectators and kids, the Guppy Division for groms who needed assistance in the water, a “Meet The Pros Soiree” at Sweetwater Surf Shop on Friday night, the Pacifico Bikini Contests at Red Dogs on Friday and Saturday, and an awesome O’Neill Music and Art Show at the Wrightsville Beach Outdoor Park on Saturday evening (a fundraiser for Hope From Helen and UNCW Surf Club).” –O’Neill Mid-Atlantic sales rep/contest director Brad Beach
