ASP World Tour Update: O’Neill Women’s Rider Malia Manuel
O’Neill Women’s team rider Malia Manuel seemed to be on top of her game, or rather, her feet, last week, sweeping easily through the first three rounds of the ASP Fiji Women’s Pro in Tavarua.
But it wasn’t until Round 4, when a wipeout led to a severely injured hand that her spot in the quarterfinals was close to being jeopardized. Manuel, however, toughed through it and got in back in the water… wrist wrapped and all, and scored less than a point over France’s Johanne Defay to win the heat.
She concluded the 5th stop of the World Championship Tour at an equal third place–an incredible result that has her in the fifth ranking spot, a place which will assure re-qualification for next year and leave her within reach for the Top 3 spots in ASP Women’s rankings. The whole O’Neill team is SO proud of Malia’s huge third place win!! We wish Malia a speedy recovery and will be sure to be cheering her on in person at the next ASP Women’s World Championship event, the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this July!
