One winter’s worth of epic waves just wasn’t enough. So, in the wake of this year’s wildly successful O’Neill Wave of the Winter competition on Oahu’s North Shore (won by Mikey O’Shaughnessy), O’Neill and Surfline had no choice but to take the event global, shifting its focus to the Southern Hemisphere’s antipodal winter season: a whole new world of epic waves and rides.

Running from June through September, and accepting entries from any surf spot south of the equator, the O’Neill Wave of the Winter has expanded — no longer limited to just the greatest ride of the season from a single stretch of Hawaiian coastline.

We’ve changed the latitude but not the attitude — to take out this new season’s Wave of the Winter, a surfer still has to deliver an “OMG, I can’t believe he made that!” ride on a suitably outrageous wave. And think of all the Southern Hemi spots waiting to offer the opportunity: Cloudbreak, Teahupo’o, Desert Point, Skeleton Bay…

By expanding the format to include the Southern Hemisphere, the O’Neill Wave of the Winter will become a premier benchmark of peak performance: one surfer on one wave, going deep when judged on a single, high-performance ride.

An international panel of judges will eventually decide the winner of a cash prize — $25,000 going to the surfer and a cool $5,000 to the videographer.

But it’s not just the prestigious judging panel that gets to make the call. The competition will also include a People’s Choice Award in which Surfline users vote for their favorite ride each month from June through September.
So buckle up for another season of intense visual ecstasy — 12-second barrels in Africa can be every bit as fun to watch as 12-foot waves in Hawaii.
