Keeping It Local: Coachella SoCal Band Must-Sees

Electric Pulp

With all the hype of Coachella and SXSW clouding our minds, we can’t forget about our local bands! Our little headquarters is based here in Orange County, California, and boy oh boy do we have our pick of new local bands. Burger Records, based in Fullerton, California has been warming our hearts by signing new Indie bands into business straight out of the OC. With their “trashy punk with a bubblegum streak” sound combining 60s psychedelia and 90s garage rock, how could they not rock?

Burger Records have another tradition besides bringing great bands to power: BURGERAMA. That’s an annual two-day music festival held at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California, on March 22nd and 23rd this year featuring dozens of bands they’ve signed. Though 2014 only marks the third year Burgerama has been in play, it’s a fresh start to something great. Some of the bands playing include The Growlers, Mac Demarco, The Black Lips, FIDLAR, The Allah Las, Tijuana Panthers, and many, many more. And hey, if these names are new to you, this only gives you a chance to immerse yourself in the SoCal greatness. Here’s a little bit about a couple of the headlining bands and a playlist to get you vibin’.

Dear Lordy if you haven’t heard The Growlers yet you are missing out. Based in Costa Mesa, California, these guys rose from the ashes of psychedelic rock in 2006. With a little bit of The Doors-y vibes and rad effects, they’ve created their own sound; as they’ve named it: Beach Goth. Besides the members being total cuties (lead singer Brooks Nielsen deserves to be on the cover of every high school girl’s binder), they also have major talent and will make you feel things you’ve never felt before. They’ve released three albums: Are you in Or Out, Hot Tropics, and Hung at Heart. We advise you to check them out.

Alright Mac Demarco is the cutest man on the planet, let’s just get that out of the way. Though he’s based in Montreal, Canada, he still has those Southern California vibes that made Burger Records sign him. He describes his music as “jizz jazz”, and often makes lewd jokes with his audience while on stage and dresses up in drag! Despite him being a silly dude, he’s got a great sound, playing the guitar he bought when he was 16 and a bunch of crazy pedals that give him such a unique sound.

Based out of Los Angeles, these guys met while working at the infamous Amoeba Records in LA. This indie rock band is bringing back the 60s vibes, the lead singer giving us a little bit of modern Bob Dylan and their instruments a little bit of the Turtles. In a modern way, of course.
