Letters from Kiana- Chapter 1
Can’t believe the day has finally come..Costa Rica! My bags are packed and I’m ready for my adventure.
My trip started earlier this week with early mornings, layovers, missed flights and of course.. lost baggage, but despite the mishaps I made it to Costa Rica safe and sound.
I knew I was in for a treat as soon as I met my cab driver, Pablo. He was such a happy and friendly man. He knew EVERYONE. He should run for mayor! He kept me entertained the entire cab ride.
We quickly arrived to the city of San Jose and made it to my hotel. After settling in, I met with the Contiki crew, including Gustavo our amazing Contiki tour guide and other travelers who were joining the trip. They came from all over the world… South Africa, London, the US, and Australia just to name a few. It was cool to be part of such a diverse group.
Later on, a few of us headed to the local store to pick up some snacks and water. That’s when I met Meg- a cool, New Jersey girl who I later found out won the O’Neill & Contiki Costa Rica Unplugged Sweepstakes. I was so happy we met and hot it off so early on. teaching her how to surf will be a breeze.
The next day we were up bright and early! We were getting ready to adventure to a volcano that was between 3,000 to 10,000 feet of elevation! I had to be prepared for the weather change, so I made sure to wear my O’Neill 365 hybrid pants to stay warm and dry in case it rained.
The way up the mountain was bumpy, but the scenery was absolutely beautiful. There were many vibrant plants and foods that covered the land. Our awesome tour guide, Gustavo, was telling us about the Costa Rican culture and of all the greatness we were seeing along the way. I was so inspired that I told myself I will try and learn some Spanish while I’m here!
We finally arrived to the volcano and WOW! It was still so thrilling!
We explored for a while, then headed to a local restaurant and indulged in a delicious Costa Rican lunch: rice, beans, and some yummy fish! It was there, that I had the BEST fresh squeezed strawberry juice and Costa Rican coffee. Yummm!
So far Costa Rica is awesome! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s adventure!
