Minneapolis, Minn. – Fans lined the shores of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis to catch the largest water-sport contest in the United States, as the 2011 Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink took way last weekend. Our O’Neill Team Rider Jen GilanFarr dominated as she got her 4th Nationals Title!
Jen spent the whole week prior to Nationals riding a boat instead of her usual jetski sets. Her only goal for Nationals was to land a backside bigspin in the contest (which she did!). We’re pretty sure that it was the first backside bigspin Women’s Wakeskating has seen in competition. And did we mention that last year at Nationals in Reno Jen was the first girl to land a kickflip in a contest?! Guess that makes Nationals a pretty progressive event for Jen.
We caught up with Jen after the event and talked to her about the contest conditions, her bigspin and what’s next on her agenda. Take a peek:
“The contest site was cool, on the outskirts of Minneapolis with the city scape in the background. However, in the land of 10,000 lakes, we ended up on a river which was overflowing with a 7mph current. Not ideal conditions, especially for wakeskating… I stuck the backside bigspin during finals in the flats, in some of the roughest water… I’m still riding quite a bit of boat trying to get some new tricks dialed in for Worlds, which takes place in Indianapolis August 20th-21st. That was my 4th National title, and I will also be going for my 4th World title later this month.”
The WWA National Championships airs on Versus, September 6th at 6pm ET.

Jen GilanFarr’s ascent to the top of women’s professional wakeskating was fast, if not especially furious. The 24-year-old Lake Tahoe native quietly swept the WWA National AND World Championships, and was unanimously named Alliance Wakeskate’s Female Rider of the Year. She is the first and only woman to ever land a wake-to-wake shuv it (several, in fact), and one of the few with all-around skills behind the boat, on rails, at the cable or exploring terrain with a winch. There are few who love water time any more then Jen, and it’s obvious. Off the water she is an accomplished graphic artist.
