This past weekend Soyon hosted Generation Next! Soyon is a two time Emmy Winner for her costume designs on So You Think You Can Dance. She has won two consecutive Emmys in 2009 and 2010 for her costumes! She has also styled for American Idol contestants and currently working with Carrie Underwood! We got to sit down with Soyon and ask her a few questions about how she started in the fashion inudstry, trends for the fall and more!
O-When did you know you wanted to become a fashion stylist?
SA-Age wise I was 16. I graduated high school at 16 and attended Otis College of Art and Design, for their fashion design program
O-16! That’s crazy! How was it being a 16 year old in college?
SA-It wasn’t bad at all. I set high goals for myself and went from fashion design to costume design and then into styling. I was able to wear a lot of different hats because I started early.
O-What steps did you take to get into the Fashion Industry?
SA-In high school I started by taking art courses and then when I was at Otis I felt like it was taking too long so I did some research and found FIDM and applied, interviewed and was accepted into their program! I learned a lot of the technical aspects from FIDM. Everything from pattern drafting, draping and grading. While I was in school I did some freelance, waited tables and assisted stylists.
O-Where do your inspirations come from for your designs?
SA-Everywhere! There really isn’t one specific place. I get them from my travels, even driving and seeing rain or the clouds in the sky. The changing of the seasons, the leaves changing to fall colors. Nature has it’s own composition of beautiful color and it makes sense. I also keep up with the runway shows, current season’s fashions, tradeshows and I read In Style Magazine and visit style.com.
O-What’s your favorite going out to dinner with the girls outfit?
SA-I like to keep in casual with jeans and a cute top, but I love BOOTS! They call me Boots McGee. I love all length boots! They are perfect for any outfit.
O-Final question: What advice would you give to a young girl wanting to get into the fahions industry?
SA-Stick with it. It’s a lot of hard work and it’s not all glamorous, but if you stick with it, it’s worth it!
