HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (August 3 & 4, 2012) – The 2012 Nike US Open of Surfing

O’Neill Girls surf team rider Sage Erickson had a break through event at the US Open ending her 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) campaign. Her lethal backhand approach paid off in the tricky Huntington Beach conditions and was able to advance to the Quaterfinals but eventually fell short to her good friend and event winner Lakey Peterson. Sage’s performance will give her confidence for the upcoming SuperGirl event tomorrow. This result is Sage’s best result thus far on the WCT to date!

Malia Manuel‘s fast and explosive surfing against Courtney Conlogue in the Quarterfinals on Friday earned her a spot in the Semifinals the following day.  For Malia’s final heat in the Semifinals she matched her best WCT finish to date and solidified her Rookie of the Year position by finishing 400 points above event winner Lakey Peterson. Malia’s relentless attack on the Huntington Beach conditions made her the girl to watch through out the event and we’re so proud of her for placing overall 3rd in the event!

“In this heat, I had a bunch of people up on the pier yelling at me, like, ‘Go! Go! Go! You’re my favorite surfer!’” Malia Manuel said. “Telling me to go on waves or if there was a set coming. Just random people. It’s cool to see so much support for women’s surfing. Hopefully that continues.”
