A TRUE MERMAID
Kiana was born and raised on the North Shore of Kauai. Being an island baby, Kiana developed a true love for the ocean. At 8 months old, Kiana’s Papa would take her surfing on his longboard. He would find small waves and hold her up by biting her swimsuit. Even at a young age, she knew the ocean as part of who she was. She began longboarding at age seven and by nine she bought her 1st shortboard. Her Papa took her surfing every day, rain or shine. Wherever he went, she followed and quickly learned to respect the ocean and understand waves knowledge. From then on, they were inseparable and she was completely hooked on surfing.
At age 10, Kiana won 4th place at her 1st ever surf contest, the Irons Brothers Pinetrees Contest in Kauai. It was that event that her competing spark was lit. She joined NSSA and HSF at age 13 and began to surf competitively all over the state of Hawaii. That year, Kiana won three out of the eight contests and placed 4th in the U14 Girls division at the NSSA Championships. In 2009 she join Team O’Neill. Since 2011, Kiana has also been a Volunteer with Kauai Ocean Recreational Experience (K.O.R.E.). As a volunteer, she assists disabled individuals get into the ocean by paddling them out on surfboards while she helps them try to surf. Delighted to be able to share her passion with others, this experience has left her feeling super blessed and grateful for her health. In 2013, Kiana graduated at the top of her class as Valedictorian from Kapaa High School in Kauai. In addition to surfing, Kiana was extremely involved in school sports, clubs, student council, and Jr. Lifeguard.
Kiana trains hard and is determined to keep competing and advancing in her skills. When talking about her future, she says she is ready to take on new challenges and is excited to see what’s to come. She is currently a student at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. Her current focus in school is majoring in communications as well as minoring in sustainability. Even though she’s hundreds of miles from her hometown, she will always remain an island girl at heart.
