SHOP CHRONICLES - HSS IN HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA
Over the years, we’ve had the honor to visit, get to know and work with some of the greatest surf shops in the country. In this series, we will highlight a few of our favorites and what makes them iconic staples in their local surf communities. We are proud to highlight Huntington Surf & Sport, a powerhouse shop and Surf City USA icon for over 45 years.
Located on the corner of PCH and Main in Huntington Beach, CA, Huntington Surf & Sport is undeniably massive. Visited every year by thousands of locals, weekend warriors and out-of-towners alike, this might be the busiest shop in California. But behind its giant exterior walls, billboard sized window ads and prime location is a down-to-earth, family run business and essential one-stop-shop.
Aaron Pai, a Hawaiian-born surfer and Northside regular, started working at Huntington Surf & Sport in 1978. In those days, the original store location was on PCH and 15th street. After working there for a year, Pai had the unique opportunity to buy the business from the original owner. After borrowing the funds, he took over and has continued to build and foster the HSS namesake for more than 4 decades.
From opening multiple locations including their 3000 square foot PCH and Main storefront in 1990, to countless SIMA awards, accolades, and thousands of customers helped, HSS continues to live and operate on its core values. Pai said, “It’s all about the love of the sport and sharing it with people.” (Surfer Magazine 2013) The Pais remain a surfing family first, continuing to run the shop and hold an extremely valuable place in the Huntington Beach Community.
